GLOSSARY

Selective Empathy

Empathy that is conditional or inconsistent. Care may be present in some moments, but withdraws when emotions feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable.

Understanding Selective Empathy

Selective empathy reflects a nervous system that can offer care — but only within certain limits. When emotions become complex, unfamiliar, or overwhelming, the empathy withdraws.

In this pattern: - Care present when emotions are simple - Withdrawal when things get complex - Empathy available for some people, not others - Subtle disengagement when overwhelmed

This is not manipulation. It often reflects emotional overwhelm or limited capacity. Still, inconsistency can quietly erode trust over time.

Examples

"I get it, but have you tried..."

"Let's not dwell on this."

"I'm here for you — but this is a lot."
