GLOSSARY

Performed Empathy

Empathy used as strategy rather than connection. Emotional attunement may feel intense, but it serves to manage power or secure closeness.

Understanding Performed Empathy

Performed empathy looks like care — but functions as control. The empathy is strategic: it's about managing the relationship, reducing discomfort, or securing closeness through obligation.

In this pattern: - Empathy comes with guilt or obligation - Vulnerability used as leverage later - Your pain becomes about their feelings - Closeness feels like a transaction

If empathy leaves you feeling guilty, obligated, or emotionally responsible, that matters. Care should not turn your vulnerability into leverage.

Examples

"I understand you better than anyone."

"After everything I've done for you..."

"No one else would be this patient."
