GLOSSARY

Reactive Blame

Flipping the story to escape accountability. When confronted, the person immediately redirects blame onto the one who spoke up.

Understanding Reactive Blame

Reactive blame is the instinct to deflect accountability by making the other person the problem. It's a defensive move — often happening so fast it feels automatic.

Instead of hearing "You hurt me," the person hears "You're attacking me" — and responds accordingly. The conversation shifts from their behavior to your tone, your timing, your sensitivity, your history. Anything to avoid the original point.

Reactive blame keeps relationships stuck. Nothing can be repaired because nothing is ever acknowledged.
