Instrumental Hurt

When hurt is used as a tool — to control a situation, silence someone, or shift the power dynamic.

Understanding Instrumental Hurt

Instrumental hurt is pain that serves a purpose. It's not just felt — it's deployed. The hurt might be real (or performed), but its function is strategic: to make the other person back down, feel guilty, or question themselves.

This differs from genuine pain, which seeks understanding. Instrumental hurt seeks control. The tell is usually what happens next: does the conversation become about understanding — or about who wins?
