GLOSSARY

Protective Accountability

Partial accountability shaped by self-protection. Apologies may appear, but often come with explanations, minimization, or withdrawal.

Understanding Protective Accountability

Protective accountability sits between real and performed. There's some acknowledgment — but it's filtered through self-protection. The person might apologize, but also explain, minimize, or quickly change the subject.

It sounds like: "I'm sorry, but you also..." "I didn't mean it that way." "Can we just move on?"

It looks like: Apologizing quickly to end discomfort. Shifting focus to intent. Avoiding deeper conversation. Partial acknowledgment, then silence.

Confusion is common here. Care and avoidance can look similar at first. Watching for consistency over time matters more than words.

Examples

An apology followed immediately by an explanation.

"I'm sorry you felt that way" instead of "I'm sorry I did that."

Acknowledging something small while avoiding the bigger issue.
